Inclusivity through Line Recombination

Creating a crowdsourced choral library of recombined lines to assist gender-expansive singers during and after vocal transition

ā€œStevieā€™s work on line recombination is such an important next step in honoring trans and gender-expansive singers. Her work is timely and important and I am glad that her voice is being heard on the national choral scene.ā€

ā€œStevie Hirner's line recombination method is an innovative and compelling approach that not only widens access to choral music for transitioning voices, but also cultivates an environment of belonging for all singers.ā€

"Stevie is a force. Her research and creative work blazes trails, welcomes all of us in, and allows us to see the choral craft as a catalyst for safety, ethical exploration, and abundance. She sees the future so clearly for the choral arts and has the skills and grace to make sure we can all get there with community in mind."

Line Recombination

Through creating a new vocal line by recombining portions of existing alto and tenor lines in their repertoire, choral directors can provide an alternative voice part that can meet the vocal needs of those individuals without compromising musical integrity.

Recombined Choral Library

The Recombined Choral Library (RCL) is a free-access, crowdsourced collection of gender-inclusive vocal lines that can be used in traditional and contemporary choral music created for and by choir directors and musicians alike. Click to access or contribute to the project:
